Lab Inspector (or Quality Control Lab Technician) Kutch
Job Description:
The Lab Inspector (or Quality Control Lab Technician) for transmission tower fabrication ensures that
all materials and components meet the required specifications, industry standards (like IS, ASTM),
and project blueprints through meticulous laboratory and in-process testing. This role is crucial for
the structural integrity and longevity of the final product.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Material and Chemical Testing
Raw Material Testing: Conduct chemical and physical tests on incoming steel (sections and
plates) to verify compliance with specified grades (e.g., IS: 2062). Tests include checking for
tensile strength, yield strength, percentage elongation, and bend tests.
Galvanizing Quality Control: Perform laboratory tests to determine the thickness and
uniformity of the protective zinc galvanizing coating applied to fabricated parts, ensuring
corrosion resistance meets standards. This may involve using wet and dry film gauges or
chemical testing of samples.
Coating Adhesion: Test the adhesion of paint or zinc coatings to assure proper bonding to
the metal surface.
Weld Testing Support: Prepare test specimens and support Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
procedures like radiography, magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, and
ultrasonic testing to ensure weld integrity.
Fabrication and Dimensional Inspection
Dimensional Checks: Perform precise measurements of fabricated tower components to
verify physical dimensions, camber, sweep, and designed thickness against shop drawings
and specifications.
Welding Inspection: Inspect welding operations and administer weld procedure and
operator qualification tests to ensure compliance with approved welding procedures and
quality standards.
Bolts and Hardware: Inspect and perform laboratory tests on high-strength bolts, nuts, and
washers to confirm their material grade, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties.
Material Traceability: Visually inspect and record the quantity and quality of steel products
received, meticulously maintaining a record of heat numbers and the identity of main
structural members to ensure traceability.
Documentation and Compliance
Report Generation: Accurately document and record all test results and inspection findings,
maintaining detailed QC reports and logs.
Non-Conformance Tracking: Issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for materials or parts
that fail to meet specifications and track remedial/corrective actions.
Calibration: Manage the calibration program for all laboratory and inspection equipment
(e.g., gauges, transits, measuring devices) to ensure accuracy and reliability of all tests.
Standards Adherence: Ensure all laboratory procedures and fabrication quality checks
adhere strictly to national and international codes, standards, and project specifications.
Liaison: Coordinate with the Quality Control (QC) Manager, production teams, and external
client inspectors to resolve technical discrepancies and quality issues promptly.
Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience
Required: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science,
Civil/Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Preferred: 5+ years of experience in a Quality Control/Lab Technician role, preferably in
heavy steel fabrication, structural metal manufacturing, or construction materials testing.
Certifications: Certifications such as ASNT Level II in NDT (e.g., MT, PT, UT, RT) or other
relevant industrial quality/inspection certifications are highly desirable.
Key Skills
Technical Acumen: Strong knowledge of steel properties, metal fabrication processes, and
galvanizing standards.
Blueprint Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, shop drawings,
specifications, and code requirements (e.g., AWS, AISC, relevant IS codes).
Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to conducting tests, reading instruments, and
documenting results.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to report findings and
communicate with cross-functional teams and external parties.
Problem-Solving: Critical thinking skills to analyze test data, identify root causes of
material/fabrication failures, and propose corrective actions.
Computer Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) for data analysis and
report preparation.
