Job Description:
Quality Inspector - Transmission Tower Fabrication
Job Summary The Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all steel components and
fabricated sections for transmission line towers meet the required specifications, engineering
drawings, and industry standards (e.g., ASCE, IEC, IS, and customer specifications). This role involves
conducting multi-stage inspections, from raw material receipt through to final galvanization and
material staging, to prevent defects and ensure the structural integrity and longevity of the final
product.
Key Responsibilities
1. Raw Material Inspection (Incoming Quality Control)
Inspect incoming raw materials (steel plates, angles, channels, bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) for
quantity, size, quality, and grade compliance with purchase order, material specifications,
and relevant standards (IS 2062/BS EN 10025).
Verify Mill Test Certificates (MTCs) for chemical composition and mechanical properties.
Conduct dimensional checks and visual inspection for surface defects like laminations,
cracks, rust, or excessive scale.
2. In-Process Fabrication Inspection
Cutting and Punching/Drilling: Check component dimensions, hole sizes, pitch, and edge
preparation against approved fabrication drawings and cutting lists.
Marking: Verify the accuracy of part numbers and legibility of permanent markings on all
components.
Welding Inspection:
o Inspect weld preparations and ensure proper fit-up and alignment.
o Witness and monitor welder qualifications and adherence to approved Welding
Procedure Specifications (WPS).
o Perform visual inspection of completed welds for defects (e.g., undercut, porosity,
cracks).
o Coordinate and witness Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods, such as Magnetic
Particle Inspection (MPI) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT), as required.
Assembly/Trial Erection: Witness and inspect the trial assembly of tower sections to verify
all components fit correctly with zero tolerance for field modification and ensure
dimensional accuracy of the overall structure.
3. Surface Treatment and Final Inspection
Galvanization: Inspect the pre-treatment process and thickness/adherence of the hot-dip
galvanized coating according to specifications (IS 4759/ASTM A123) using a coating
thickness gauge.
Conduct a final visual and dimensional inspection of all finished and galvanized members
before packing.
Verify the final quality and quantity of all components, including fasteners and accessories,
before dispatch.
4. Documentation, Reporting, and Compliance
Document all inspection and test results accurately in inspection reports, logs, and quality
documentation.
Issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for rejected materials or parts and coordinate with
production to implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPA).
Maintain a complete and organized quality dossier for each tower project, including material
traceability, inspection records, and test certificates.
